Tough Decision

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — After 30 years in business an Overland Park woman has a tough decision to make, relocate her store or close for good and retire. It’s a move that she knew was coming, but became all too real when an eviction notice was delivered.

John’s Tailoring is tucked away on the south end of the Metcalf South Mall next to Sears. It’s been in the same place since the early 1980′s. The woman who’s been opening and closing the doors for the better part of three decades has a decision to make.

“I’ve made so many friends through the years,” explained Sonia Warshawski.

Warshawski couldn’t begin to tell you how many people have come through her doors over the years, but she’s seen most come time and time again.

“I have really wonderful people come in here and I met so many wonderful, wonderful people, I’m really gonna miss it,” she lamented.

She knew she’d have to close up the business she and her husband started decades ago, but getting the official word was still tough.

“This was a shock even knowing it’s coming to an end, but when I received that note really shocking.”

The tough decision to make: move or call it quits.

“It’s very difficult because of my age, my children want me to retire, but I shall see, I don’t have too much time, but I think the Lord will lead me in the right direction,” she said.

Whatever the decision, she will survive, it’s in her nature, her character. She is a Holocaust survivor, something she eagerly shares with people. She was touched when she came in to work on April 15th, her liberation day, and saw her customers didn’t forget.

“I came into the shop and here the flowers and notes, this is really something I really appreciate,” she said.

Gestures like that make it hard to retire. Will she survive without it, of course, but it will be difficult.

“I was always proud of my little place because it’s a part of me and my taste,” she said.

Warshawski expects to make a decision in the next few weeks, she has to be out of her space by the beginning of July.
