Denzel Washington’s Fences dominated the AARP the Magazine’s Movies for Grownups Award nominations with eight nods, including ones for Washington in the best actor and best director categories.
Fences, the 1950s-set drama based on August Wilson’s play of the same name, also picked up nominations for best actress (Viola Davis), best supporting actor (Stephen McKinley Henderson), best screenwriter (Wilson) and the uniquely AARP categories of best buddy picture, best grown-up love story and best intergenerational film.
Elsewhere, awards season contenders Lion, Manchester by the Sea and Sully picked up nominations in key categories, particularly best film, which was rounded out by La La Land, Loving and Silence.
The AARP awards will be hosted by Margo Martindale at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel on Feb. 6.
